born in Memphis, Tennessee - grew up in Detroit/Michigan - learned to sing with her dad in the "New Bethel Baptist Church"

well-known musicians like Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, Clara Ward and the Ward Sisters came in this church too With her Song "Respect", Aretha Franklin in the end of the 60s was an Icon of the black Music in the USA and the song became also in her interpretation a hymn of the African-American comunity; at this time the song was a "manifesto of the black liberation struggle". the song is not only regarded as one of the most important soul classics, but also as one of the hymns of the women's movement The Women's Movement (also called the Women's Rights Movement) is a global social movement committed to equality of women in the state and society. It arose in connection with the social and educational reform movements of the 19th century in Western Europe and the USA and quickly spread to other countries. Important topics of the women's movement are u.a. gender equality and the reassessment of traditional gender roles in order to eradicate tutelage, injustice and social inequalities, particularly in relation to gender.
